The new film by Iranian master Jafar Panahi, who won the Palme d’Or earlier this year at the Cannes Film Festival. A thriller in which revenge, humor, and humanity come together. A small accident sets off a chain reaction of increasingly serious problems.
Yahid (Vahid Mobasseri) is working in a garage when, on a quiet evening, a customer walks in whose car is acting up after a minor accident. Vahid is startled when he thinks he recognizes Eghbal, the officer who tortured him in prison. He smells an opportunity for revenge, but at the same time his doubts begin to grow. Together with a group of fellow victims, he desperately tries to uncover the truth. Their search leads them through situations both perilous and absurd. But how can they be sure they’ve found the right man?
It Was Just An Accident is France’s submission for Best International Feature Film. The movie was filmed in secret and is partly based on Panahi’s last imprisonment in 2022–2023.
