It is widely believed that open-mindedness is a virtue, and that when we encounter new ideas, we should give them thoughtful and charitable consideration. To be closed-minded on the other hand is seen as a character flaw, and is even used as an insult.
To be open-minded, we are often recommended to “suspend judgment” and to think about things without deciding in advance whether they’re good or bad. We’re advised to take seriously even things which seem strange.
Is it possible, however, to be truly open-minded? How open-minded can you be? Don’t we sometimes need to learn to ignore and dismiss some ideas?
Philosophers and psychologists have puzzled over how individuals and institutions should relate to new information. Some even argue that closed-mindedness is sometimes even helpful. How open-minded should we be? Or how should we be open-minded?
As usual, drinks & snacks are provided. All are welcome!
This event is organized by VOX Delft in collaboration with SG.
