Debate: Love Thy Neighbour – Finding mutual understanding following the Nashville Statement

Love Thy Neighbour

Finding mutual understanding following the Nashville Statement

Last year, several hundred representatives of Christian faiths in the Netherlands signed the Dutch version of the Nashville Statement. This resulted in some heated debate, both in progressive Christian circles as well as in wider society. In response, the president of the Netherlands Humanist Association, Boris van der Ham, penned a Liefdesverklaring (Love Statement), which was signed by many thousands. However, it has become clear that further conversations are needed to find mutual understanding and move past the initial controversy.

On Tuesday May 14th we will meet for a panel discussion with representatives of both sides of the initial divide in order to reach across and find common ground. The conversation will start off with an introduction by Boris van der Ham and guided by Talitha Muusse. The panel will consist of:

  • Boris van der Ham, Chair of the Dutch Humanist Association
  • Cecile Calis, TrueU LGBT+ community TU Delft
  • Marc de Vries,  affiliate professor in Christian Philosophy and professor of science education at TU Delft
  • Rinze Benedictus, professor of Aerospace Materials & Structural Integrity and Diversity Officer at TU Delft
