Life in a rich country can be real nice. But at what cost? And what if you have not only a conscience, but knowledge and awareness of the injustices that enable your good life?
Living with a feeling of guilt sucks. How far do you need to go in order to really live guilt free? And how far can you go? To what extent does our society allow for an ethical existence?
Many religions point to some form of a golden rule, where harming others should be avoided. Many legal and ethical traditions have similar starting points. Some include not just protecting humans, but also animals, plants, the landscape, microbes, everything. But existence, you could argue, implies suffering. You breathe the air, drink the water, eat the food, occupy space. All of our choices imply consequences for others. Can you be innocent, when you need cheap clothing, central heating, electronics, avocados, bananas, and exotic timbers for your next office renovation?
Let’s have an open chat about our individual and collective efforts towards living guilt free.
