Existential Tuesday: How rich is too rich?

Money is power, or so the saying goes. Does that mean that too much money = too much power? Global society counts more and more multimillionaires and billionaires every year, and the richest of all have deeper pockets than we can even imagine. If wealth translates into political power, or other forms of social and cultural influence, should there be a cap on it in order to protect democracy, freedom, justice, and equality?

And if we did put a cap on it, where should it lie? How should it be controlled, and what would its impact be?

If you’re looking for some background on this topic, have a look at philosopher Ingrid Robeyns and her idea called Limitarianism.

EXISTENTIAL TUESDAYS

Existential Tuesdays are small weekly* lunch discussions in the Nook of the TUD Library. Practice your critical thinking skills, learn to see the world from different perspectives, and hang out with your fellow deep thinkers in Delft.

Check out SG’s related events this quarter on the theme: Power and Privilege

This quarter is all about wealth, greed, and the roots of inequality. With more billionaires than ever, global crises in the 21st century have enriched the few while billions have been made poorer. Can our society keep sustaining this divide?  And if not, where will you stand in the next mass uprising?
