Many of us struggle with screentime. We constantly switch from device to device, from laptops for study/work to leisure and private screens. Not to mention the TV’s, advertisement screens, menu screens in restaurants, overhead screens in train stations, trams, trains, and buses, etc. You get the picture: screens are everywhere. And being behind a screen means, usually, not being fully present in the physical space that you’re in or with the people that you’re with.
Today I want to have an open discussion about digital technologies and what they mean to our lives. This is not a moral judgment on the digital lifestyle, but an open examination. Why did we develop our culture in this way? What do screens and their content bring us? What do they change, or add, to reality, that was not there in all the millions of years before their advent? Is there a fundamental difference to life with or without them? And if so, what?
We may end up analyzing the human motivation to innovate.
