Bullshit is all around us. Sometimes it is easy to spot, but our brains can be tricked!
In this series of lectures we will need some tools to spot when we are being
manipulated through mental trickery.

Freedom of Choice by Joris Luyendijk

Joris Luyendijk needs little introduction. He is a preeminent journalist and writer who last visited Delft in 2015 to talk about the financial crisis of 2008. Given the current corona crisis, what better time to invite him back?

Joris excels in big picture critiques of Western culture. For this lecture, he will take aim at what he calls “the ideology of the freedom of choice.” An ideology that sits right at the core of our cultural values, but that also lets us make bad, bad decisions: from freely creating and consuming fake news, to choosing unfit leaders, to enabling global crises like the corona pandemic and climate change.

What does our freedom of choice really mean? And how does it make things worse? Come see Joris lay down his controversial argument and put us all to shame.

Joris Luyendijk has written for The Guardian, notably maintaining a blog that brought London bankers into discussion with the rest of the world after the financial crisis. Something nobody thought was possible. He also has many books to his name. You can find an overview on his website or on Wikipedia.

SG Presents: The Spotting Bullshit Series

Bullshit – roughly, the deliberate or accidental spreading of untruths – is all around us. It’s a thing of all ages, but it’s very possible that we are living in THE age of bullshit. Peak bullshit, as it were. Sometimes it is easy to spot, but our brains can be tricked!

In this series of seven interactive lectures, Studium Generale will tackle the issue head on and offer you some tools to spot when we are being manipulated through mental trickery. Join these lectures and inoculate yourself against fake news, logical fallacies and other manipulations, and become a beacon of independent, rational and critical thought!

The Spotting Bullshit lecture series will be held every Tuesday between September 22 and November 24 2020 during lunchtime (12:40-13:30) in the main hall in the TU Delft Library, except the lecture on September 29 (20:00). Registration is required via EventBrite or you can tune in via livestream (check our website or socials for the links). These activities are free of charge.
