Tuesday 7 April | Podcast: Why are your parents sending you fake news?

An avalanche of misinformation, fake news and hoaxes are being shared widely online as people seek reliable information on the coronavirus crisis. Can we hold Google, Facebook and WhatsApp responsible for the spread of fake news or does the problem lie closer to home? Check out this podcast by The Guardian.

Studium Generale created a Corona Care Package to make #StayingIn as pleasant as possible. In the following weeks we will share videos, blogs, articles and podcasts within four focus areas: Mental Health, Fake News, Arts & Culture and Philosophy.

Monday’s post: How to be alone

Monday 6 April | Mental Health & Wellbeing

On Mondays and Fridays we aim to address Mental Health & Wellbeing in general, and stress and burn out amongst our students in particular. The issues are often study or work related, but the current crisis can also cause anxiety, depression or feelings of loneliness. We do not claim we can solve these problems, but try to do our part, for example by offering free Yoga & Meditation sessions, every Monday and Friday at 12.30 on Instagram (@skycampusnetherlands).

How to be alone

Many of us have become modern day hermits overnight. But how do you survive being alone? Billy Barr has been doing it for decades in the Rocky Mountains and shares his tips with us.

Corona Care Package Extra | Online Audio Lectures by Home Academy (Dutch)

Studium Generale enjoys a longstanding collaboration with Home Academy Publishers, who have produced over 200 audio lectures on a wide range of topics including history, philosophy, religion, literature, science, music and more. As a subscriber of the Home Academy Club you have unlimited access to all content across all your online and offline devices.

Since, like us, they have had to suspend all live events for the time being, Home Academy now offers a one month free subscription to the Home Academy Club. You can visit www.home-academy.nl/club-demo, select Clublid met code and enter the following coupon code: SGDELFT2020

Make sure to check out their content! For instance, get some positive vibes from the two lectures on why the future is bright by Maarten Boudry, who recently gave a talk for the Bèta Balie and Studium Generale.

Corona Care Package | What’s next?

Over the next weeks we plan to engage TU Delft researchers on questions about moral choices and dilemma’s in technology. A way for you to be intellectually challenged and engage in philosophical conversation whilst in quarantine.

As you have seen, some of the content we have been sharing has been our own (writing blogs, videos from our archives), but we also share interesting content from others. So if you have any suggestions (within our focus areas), feel free to contact us via sg@tudelft.nl!

We are all in this together, let’s make the best of it! Stay safe and see you on Monday!

Thursday 2 April | Philosophy

One of the most popular recurring formats in our line-up are the lunch lectures on Philosophy. In these confusing times, contemplation and reflection are more needed than ever. Therefore, every Thursday we will share the most compelling Philosophy books, articles and clips we came across in our archives and research.

Suddenly we’re surrounded by armchair virologists. Even in times of uncertainty we all turn into specialists when we engage in online discussions. I might not be an expert, but I have all the answers, right? Find out ‘Why everyone is always right’ in this episode of A bite of Philosphy by Ruben Mersch  from our archives.

Wednesday 1 April | Arts & Culture

Since we can’t go out to the theatre, cinema or museum we are exploring the virtual possibilities to visit these places. Fortunately many museums and artists already offer virtual tours and performances. We will select the best ones to keep you on a healthy Arts & Culture diet!

Arts are a good way to cope with comprehensive circumstances. You can find a refuge in films, theatre, dance or stories. And many artists, being shut down by corona, have found their refuge online to still be able to share their passion. The International Theatre Amsterdam (ITA), VPRO/MONDO and the National Theatre have joined forces and now offer a story everyday read by a Dutch actor. All stories originate from the fourteenth century Italian poet Boccaccio, who wrote Decamerone. Stories about ten young people who flee from the plague that has taken over Florence, and on their way tell each other stories. Check out the new episodes published daily at 20:00. Note that it is in Dutch.

For English speakers we recommend Mezrab House of Stories, who live stream a storytelling night called Mezrab TV every Friday at 20:00. So tune in tonight via their Facebook page for theatre, music and stories in English to listen to from your couch.

Tuesday 31 March  |  Fake News

For the upcoming months we had a lecture series planned titled ‘Spotting Bullshit’. In an era where Fake News is omnipresent (especially now!) we thought it would be interesting to help our audience spot the trolls, deepfakes and logical fallacies. The series has been moved to October and November, and over the coming weeks we will already start sharing content to help you separate the news from the nonsense in these confusing times.

Media currently share nothing other than corona updates. Some of those messages are false. Unfortunately, they spread just as fast as the virus itself and cause quite a bit of confusion, fear and uncertainty. Medialogica, an initiative by broadcaster Human, checks the latest corona news and debunks the false alarms on their online platform. Check out today’s post from Medialogica on debunking the latest false alarms about the corona virus. Note that it is in Dutch.

Monday 30 March  |  SG Presents the Corona Care Package

The outbreak of the Corona virus has affected us all. Our thoughts, first and foremost, go out to those who have lost their loved ones and those who are trying to recover from the virus.

Following the most recent restrictions Studium Generale decided to cancel all events until the 1st of June. Our office is closed, but we continue to work from home. Even though our events are cancelled/postponed, we remain committed to our mission: broadening your academic horizon and stimulating critical reflection. We intend to make #stayingin as pleasant as possible by offering content that’s informative, inspiring and thought provoking. So how are we going to do just that?

In the following weeks we will share video’s, blogs, articles and podcasts within four focus areas: Fake News, Mental Health, Arts & Culture and Philosophy.

On Mondays and Fridays we aim to address Mental Health & Wellbeing in general, and stress and burn out amongst our students in particular. We do not claim we can solve these problems, but try to do our part, for example by offering free Yoga & Meditation sessions, every Monday and Friday at 12.30 on Instagram (@skycampusnetherlands).

Is our fear is more dangerous than the virus itself? Belgian clinical psychologist Mattias Desmet places the Corona crisis squarely amongst the longstanding mental health issues of our society. Burnout, depression, loneliness, drug use, and our faltering worldview. Check out today’s post, for Dutch readers only alas!

Stay tuned over the coming days and weeks for our daily themed updates. Stay healthy, stay safe and, above all, stay inspired with the SG Corona Care Package! #stayingin
